()Jess Michaels, a best-selling author of historical romances that feature heroines who speak their minds and who doesn’t obsessively check her FitBit steps or watch daytime Court TV, is not spending too much time on FitBit.

As many imagine the author’s life, her first venture into publishing was with a traditional publishing contract. Michaels was able to publish a few books and decided to try self-publishing.

“I’d begun developing an audience for my books and wanted to try something different. Authors I respected had success and greater control over their work with self-publishing, so I was eager to try it for myself,” says Michaels.

She was able to quickly master it and she decided to go. “strictly indie”Amazon’s 2015 Annual Report Kindle Direct Publishing(KDP) allows you to publish in eBook or print. Her decision to self publish has seen her appear ten times in the USA bestsellers. Her husband, who was employed at a large tech company, left and now works alongside Michaels to manage their publishing company.

“I wanted more control over not just the creative writing, but also the marketing strategy, cover art, and other business aspects of publishing. I grew frustrated being unable to make these decisions going the traditional publishing route,”She said. “I’m both a writer and entrepreneur, and I’m enjoying more creative and financial rewards than I ever have.”

Michaels believes that Michaels’ initial idea of becoming an indie was “taking a leap off a cliff and hoping you can fly before you crash,”She was pleasantly surprised by the results.

This is a helpful tip for authors considering self-publishing:

– Full creative control. Authors have complete creative control over their book. You own the book you have nurtured from its inception until it is finished.

– You can get your book to market quickly. KDP helps authors set up books and get them to readers in a matter days.

Increase your income. Self-publishing authors can decide their own publishing prices and receive a greater percentage of royalties.

Indie publishers simplify and make marketing easy for self-published authors. Authors can also use self-publishing companies like Amazon to promote their books to more people.

Many authors find support via writers’ groups online such as Facebook groups or in-person through workshops and conferences. There are many writing groups in cities that meet regularly. These groups can offer constructive criticism and help you find other resources.

“I fell into self-publishing by accident, and found that connecting with other authors and joining a local writers’ organization helped me improve my technique and career tremendously,”T.S. Paul. “When sales of my novels began to take off, I began working with freelancers and a virtual assistant, also, to grow the community around me.”

No matter if a writer is interested or not in romance, mystery, or fantasy, self-publishing through services such as KDP may allow them to follow their dreams. This is especially true if they are willing to learn the business side to publishing as much as Jess Michaels.

You never know. Perhaps the best-seller list is closer than we think.
