The number of people using the roads and highways to travel this summer for work, vacations, family outings and barbeques is certain to rise. You don’t need to spend more money on gasoline.

These tips from the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence will help you save money on your summer vacation.

Before you set out

– Check your tires. Poorly aligned or under-inflated tires can cause the engine to work harder and waste fuel. A professional should align out-of line wheels as indicated by uneven tread wear.

Follow the maintenance schedules in your owner’s guide. Check for oil leaks, replace filters, and have any engine performance problems, such as rough idle, poor acceleration, fixed at a shop. This is a wise decision, given today’s high-tech engine technology.

Enjoy your vacation

Speeding is a bad habit. Speeding to your destination may reduce your mileage per gallon by 15% or more

Sudden accelerations also cause gas to guzzle. You should anticipate traffic patterns and adjust your speed slowly. If possible, use cruise control.

Use air conditioning and windows wisely. Because of the reduction in drag caused by air drag, your mileage will improve. This applies even when the air conditioner is turned on. However, you should avoid using your air conditioner when there is heavy stop-and-go traffic.

You get your life back

To reduce the engine’s weight, make sure to get rid of all your vacation stuff and other clutter.

Take off the rooftop cargo carrier. This will reduce drag and improve your mileage, similar to closed windows.
