Hydrogen-powered cars may one day be commonplace. But motorists who still want to drive will have to make do with what they have. “green”To help the environment, you don’t necessarily have to make changes to your vehicles. Experts at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, a non-profit organization that was founded in 1972 to improve automotive repair and service quality, suggest that drivers just need to make some changes to their driving habits. “Regular vehicle maintenance and better driving habits are two strategies that virtually every vehicle owner can embrace,” notes Martin Lawson, editorial director at ASE. These tips are from ASE and can help you get started on your journey to eco-conscious care.

* Keep the engine running at peak performance. An unresponsive spark plug can result in fuel efficiency dropping by up to 30 percent. As directed in the manual, replace fluids and filters.

* Keep tires properly inflated and aligned. Inflated tires can reduce engine effort and fuel consumption.

* Find a good technician. Ask your friends for recommendations. Ask friends for recommendations. Verify the credentials of the technicians. ASE-certified technicians are certified in the following specialties: engine performance, air conditioning, and more. ASE-certified technicians are adorned with blue and white ASE shoulder badges and have credentials that list their specific areas of certification. They often have the ASE sign displayed at work.

* Have your vehicle’s air conditioner serviced only by a technician certified to handle and recycle refrigerants. If the air conditioner is not being serviced properly, it could release ozone-depleting chemicals into the atmosphere.

* Avoid speeding and sudden accelerations; both habits guzzle gas. While waiting for friends and family, turn off the engine. To reduce unnecessary driving, consolidate your daily tasks.

* Remove excess items from the vehicle. A lighter vehicle will get you more mileage. Reduce drag by removing your rooftop luggage carrier following vacations.

* If you do your own repairs, properly dispose of engine fluids and batteries. These items are accepted by some repair facilities. You can also call your local government to get more information.
