Many Americans take out their jump ropes, soccer balls, and other equipment in preparation for the sunny weather. Some get ready to go to the beach. Others are more inactive. If you’re one of these people, you don’t have any excuses for not getting enough exercise.
The Weight-control Information Network, (WIN), is an information service of National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and National Institutes of Health (NIH). It offers tips to overcome the following obstacles:
“I am too busy.”It doesn’t matter how busy your life is, there are still ways you can fit exercise into your schedule. One way to do this is to designate a part of each day for exercise. You can also schedule exercises in shorter bouts like 15-minute walks during the morning, lunch, and after dinner.
Do active chores. Some examples include washing cars, mowing grass, gardening and vacuuming. Family walks in your community and visits to recreation centers and parks are great ways to get your family involved.
“I am too tired.”After a long day, it might seem difficult to do anything except veg out in front the TV. Here’s the secret: Exercise gives you more energy. A brisk walk, jog, or jog can help you feel more energetic. A gentle walk after work can help you relax and reduce stress. Make exercise enjoyable! Turn on your radio or your portable music device to dance to your favorite tunes while you jog on the treadmill.
“I don’t like physical activity.”How many times has it happened that you have said you don’t like exercising? If you want to bring joy to exercise, get a friend to be your buddy. Together, you can encourage each other and socialize. Choose an activity you love, such as walking. It is more likely that you will stick with it. You can walk with a friend, or simply enjoy the view while you are walking.
