A few businesses were able to find creative solutions when the economy plummeted and they had reasons to be afraid.
Consumers gravitated to these trends because of low incomes and record job losses. buying in bulkUse group discount websites. There was always demand and supply.
The success of wholesalers such as Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s was a result. Warehouse clubs were not the only ones seeing an increase in bulk sales. Supersized purchases were observed at farmers markets, co-ops, and natural food stores. Whole Foods reported that bulk food sales were increasing by around 25% every year.
However, this was not the only trend in buying.
“The Groupon following led to an explosion of similar sites, like LivingSocial and Dealfind, not to mention all of the city-specific ones,”Joe Kalfa, leader of All Our Power group buying movement, says:
“You can buy virtually any commodity in bulk and get all kinds of group discounts on spas, restaurants and vacations galore, but what about monthly expenses like car insurance, gas and health care? It seems to me like there’s room for some improvement,” adds Kalfa.
Perhaps there is.
According to Moneyland magazine, warehouse club members can cut their food budget by 25 to 35 percent. Shoppers who choose to forgo packaging and instead buy food from bins and dispensers can save up to 30 percent on prepackaged goods.
These savings can be applied to insurance policies and gas prices, medical bills and cell phone plans, among other things.
All Our Power, which aims to gather 10 million members and obtain membership discounts from all service providers and retailers could be the next group buying trend.
As consumers around the globe realize the potential advantages of a free membership that includes serious negotiating power, there is already buzz about the new movement.
