Rantt is a digital news publication that focuses on slowing down the news cycle and getting the facts right.
“We’re taking an episodic approach to covering stories, and pride ourselves on slowing down the news,”Zak Ali, Rantt CEO, and co-founder, comments in a feature published in The Huffington Post March 6, 2017.
“We want to be the opposite of everything we see wrong with the news media: sensationalism, misleading clickbait, false equivalency, etc.,”Ali: “Also, we feel like we are a voice for the disenfranchised population who feel let down by the mainstream media. Rantt will be the first episodic news source that people turn towards to get the full truth the first time,”He insists.
Rantt went online in November 2016 in response to the controversial presidential election. As of March 2017, the Washington, D.C.-based startup had more than 100,000 unique visitors. The company’s data suggests that the site has more than 100,000 unique visitors as of March 2017. However, most of the readers are millennials. Rantt’s increasing popularity supports the notion that there is still a need for quality, well-documented news stories.
Tricent Capital, a Silicon Valley investor firm, funded the initial funding of the company. But their success is leading them to grow and raise additional funds. Ali claims that the popularity of the site reflects the public’s desire to know the truth and is an indication of their interest in accurate news.
The public’s interest in current events and politics soared during the election. It remains high today, which opens up the possibility of alternative media options for a news-hungry audience. Talking Points Memo, Politico and Drudge Report are three examples of independent online news outlets that can fill a niche and offer an alternative to traditional media sources.
Rantt.com includes a news section and an opinion section (known collectively as Rantts), a section devoted news about President Donald Trump (known collectively as Unpresidented), and a section called “Underreported” that offers a weekly summary on the top news stories.
