Children across America shovel snow every winter. It’s not something they enjoy. One kid was so ingenious that he decided not to shovel again.

Hillel Glazer was 15 years old when he had to shovel snow from the block. After a particularly tedious shoveling session, Hillel Glazer realized that there had to be a better way.

“That evening, I took a heating pad from my parents’ medicine closet and dissected it,” said Glazer. “Within five minutes, I blew the fuses in the house.”

Glazer created a heated mat with heating cables and tape two weeks later after his family bought another heating pad. It lasted only two days.

Glazer shoveled snow until he was 25 years old, but this was not the end of his story. Glazer, who was a business valuation consultant, felt frustrated by his long workweeks and wanted to be his own boss. Glazer thought back to his childhood heating mats, but this time he was determined to make them work.

“Within a few months and with the help of the Internet, I had educated myself on various types of heating elements, general electrical concepts and rubber and plastic manufacturing techniques,” said Glazer. “I identified a company to supply me with heating elements and used their engineers’ brain power to help develop our first prototype.”HeatTrak, Glazer’s company has been selling his snow and ice melting mats since 2004.

HeatTrak mats melt snow at two inches an hour using electricity. The mats are completely safe because they contain a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, which instantly cuts off power to the mat if there is a current leakage. Businesses and universities use the mats to make their facilities safer for their employees, students, and clients.

Glazer has started to sell HeatTrak mats for his home. You can now purchase stair and walkway mats for your home, making it safer. All because a teenager didn’t want to shovel more snow.
