– Modern style and design can be found everywhere. They can also serve as a foundation for many new homes being built today.

But what does it mean, and how can it be integrated into existing houses?

“Contemporary style is really about reduction – reducing things to their essence and having really clean lines and uncluttered spaces,” says Alan Pickett, Pella Corporation’s resident architect.

Contemporary design is a softer version of modern. It has the same clean lines as modern, but with minimalistic decoration. You can achieve a contemporary look in your home by incorporating light, color, and fabric.

Modern-style dwellings today will feature asymmetrical forms, windows with minimal trim and windows in contrasting or dark colors, as well as lots of glass and other textures.

Here are some tips from Pella Windows in Iowa to help you find the right design for accentuating your home.

* Add neutrals with color – One clear sign of contemporary design is neutral tones, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring.

Contemporary style is dominated by shades of blue and gray. White and taupe are great choices for bold, simple colors that can be used as focal points in wall photos and area rugs.

*Let the light in – Light and shadow in a space are key to contemporary style and are much less about decoration. The light fixtures must be straight and have sleek metallic finishes. However, the windows in your home may also reflect the contemporary style. Pella’s Architect Series Contemporary line is a collection of windows with a large expanse of glass, and thin frames. These windows can engulf a room and create a foundation for contemporary style.

* Use textiles – In reducing things to the essence, silk, wool, linen and cotton – all natural fabrics – are typically used to highlight the clean lines of contemporary design.

This means furniture that is less ornamental and made from natural materials like wood with a lower grain. Natural textiles offer bold colors that can be used in minimalist spaces.

* Mix it up – Most homes today are going to have some existing traditional elements – such as crown molding – but don’t let that stand in your way. The neutral colors that are best for your existing design elements, such as gray, blue, white or taupe should be used. Add an accent color to the design and modern furniture to bring together the contemporary and traditional visions.
