The Horn of Africa is characterized by barren landscapes, dirt fields, and riverbeds that are completely dry. Emaciated and tired camels and goats walk across dry lands looking for food and water. It’s the worst! droughtThis is the 60th anniversary of its founding.

ChildFund International is continuing its drought emergency operations in this region. It also continues to focus on long-term projects for development that will help reduce food shortages.

ChildFund International is partnering with the U.N. World Food Program to operate the Food for Assets program in Kenya’s Turkana.

“In the vegetable gardens, women tend spinach, tomatoes, green peppers, okra, watermelons, kale, maize and cowpeas,”Anne Lynam Goddard is the president and CEO at ChildFund. “It’s amazing to see how smart farming practices have transformed this community. In the midst of drought, we’ve discovered the Garden of Eden — it’s green everywhere!”

Six communities are part of the Food for Assets program. This program provides support for 3,000 households and teaches pastoralist communities methods for farming and irrigation. In exchange for helping to build community gardens and irrigation systems, the program provides food and goods for families.

Access to water for humans and animals increases crop production, decreases environmental degradation, and provides more pasture for livestock. People in rural areas with no access to water can learn to use special pans that capture water to grow crops like maize, sorghum and sorghum.

The Food for Assets program provides food rations for people who are no longer dependent on food assistance. Participants receive their food for one year, while they learn how to produce food for themselves. The most vulnerable are then eligible for food aid.

“Food for Assets is not an emergency relief effort,” Goddard said. “It’s a long-term development intervention that helps reduce a community’s vulnerability to future droughts. We’re strengthening communities and giving people the resources and training they need to rely on themselves.”

Pregnancy can be very exciting. There are so many things to do and so many appointments. Many expectant mothers worry so much about the baby that they neglect to take care of themselves.

Experts say that prenatal vitamins are vital for both mom and baby.

“During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many physical and hormonal changes. She can experience things like fatigue, loss of appetite and an upset stomach, which can make it difficult to maintain the proper levels of essential nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy,”Jay M. Goldberg MD, FACOG, is an obstetrician based in Los Angeles.

Prenatal vitamins include DHA, an Omega-3 fat acid, and Folic acid. These vitamins not only help soon-to-be moms maintain a healthy lifestyle, but also can help the baby’s brain and eyes develop.
