My friends thought I had lost it when I declared my plans to travel to Nicaragua to search for luxury travel destinations. Many believe that Nicaragua is still in turmoil politically and poses a security threat to travelers. Nicaragua is one the most safe places in Central America. It boasts stunning natural beauty, world-class boutique hotels, and bargain prices.

I drove 50 miles northwest from Managua to Leon, a colonial city. The gem-like Hotel La Perla ($100 Double) was my discovery in this historical university town. James Petersen, an ex-pat and Mark McKnight have lovingly restored this magnificent neoclassical mansion.

Each of the 15 large rooms are furnished with antiques. It is home to some of the most exquisite dining in the country. The chefs created a memorable dish of local lobster and seabass, which was then served in a world-class restaurant.

After a few relaxing days in Leon, my next stop was Grenada, Nicaragua’s other colonial town. International tourism is a major focus of the building restoration that was under way. Although the city was beautiful, it lacks the intellect and authenticity that Leon has.

I stayed at Hotel La Gran Francia, another neo-classical treasure. It was built in the 16th century and restored to its former glory in 1995. It is located right next to Parque Central. The hotel’s restaurant serves delicious gourmet meals at affordable prices (60 dollars for four). My spacious room was brightly lit and decorated with period pieces ($100 double).

The Nicaraguan jaunt came to an abrupt halt in Costa Rica’s former fishing village San Juan del Sur. The town was booked full for New Year’s Eve. I was able to find lodging in a small private house, which cost $10.

$50

A $6-day pass to the Pelican Eyes resort saved me. My final days were spent poolside, plotting my return to Nicaragua’s Caribbean Corn Islands.
