Winter’s harsh winds can make cheeks look less than radiant due to dry indoor heat and the drying of the air.

However, winter does not have to look dull and drab until spring. “You can take steps to keep your skin clear and healthy through the winter,”Dr. David Colbert is the founder and chief physician of NY Dermatology Group. “For example, moisturizing daily with a thick lotion, like one made from shea or white petrolatum, can help restore and protect dehydrated skin.”

Some Colbert’s suggestions are contrary to conventional wisdom. It’s not necessary to wash your legs and arms every day. Your skin can be stripped of its natural moisture by soap. “Wash your face, hands and feet with soap no more than once daily,”Colbert said. “Rinse the rest of your body with warm, not hot, water -; sweat dissolves in water, so you don’t need soap to come clean.”

Chronic skin conditions can be triggered by harsh winter weather and the flu season. Cold sores can flare up in winter, so it is important to have an over-the-counter remedy on hand to ease the pain. Colbert suggests that his patients use Nexcare Cold Sore Treatment, a moisturizing cream to reduce the drying and cracking caused by outbreaks. Microvex is a topical treatment that combines benzocaine with allantoin to provide fast pain relief and protection.

Colbert also suggests to his patients that they reduce their outdoor exposure. “If you must go outdoors, use scarves, hats, masks and mittens or gloves to limit skin exposure,”He continues. “For extra protection, apply a petroleum-based product to your lips. Using a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays also helps prevent skin damage.”

If the humidity levels drop below 60% indoors, Americans should consider running a humidifier. Humidifiers are more effective than heat in making rooms feel warm and keep skin from drying out.

Healthy living habits can help keep your skin looking young. Although people may not be able to hydrate as well in winter, their bodies still need water to keep them hydrated. You can meet your daily water needs by drinking herbal teas or other hot liquids. The skin’s circulation is improved by exercise, which gives it a healthy glow. You can improve your skin’s appearance by taking a brisk walk for 20-30 minutes three times a week.
