He suggests that you approach time management like an investor and look for the highest return on your energy. “Your management task,”Hardy says, “is to spend more time on what gives you energy and to guard against, eliminate, delegate or mitigate your time on those things that take energy away from you.”
Hardy gives the following advice to Americans looking for a better way to use their time:
– Reduce wasted time. One study found that American workers who work 40 hours a week waste 50% of their time on non-productive tasks. Another 37 percent spends their time surfing the Internet, eating lunch, taking breaks, and chatting. People are most productive for a maximum of 10 hours per week.
Look at how much time you are wasting and think about what you could do with it.
– Prioritize energy. Urgent tasks must be completed by a certain date. The most important tasks should be those that you feel will make the most of your time. Finish urgent tasks first. Delegating tasks is an option if the task is not urgent, but it is important.
Set standards. Life is a series if trades. Time for money, time for family, time for gym, time for television. Define your values and trade your time to them.
